Ishbaal King of Israel

Now Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-bo′sheth[a] the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahana′im; and he made him king over Gilead and the Ash′urites and Jezre′el and E′phraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bo′sheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

  1. 2.8 Ish-bosheth: “Man of shame.” The name was really Ish-baal, “Man or servant of Baal,” but the writer could not bring himself to pronounce so profane a name, especially as it belonged to an Israelite; cf. 1 Chron 8.33; 9.39, where the name is given as Esh-baal.
